At 6:19 p.m., the Crisfield Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched along with several other fire departments and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for a reported watercraft in distress. The call was made by DNR to Somerset 911. The only information provided was that a vessel had launched from Chance Harbor and was in the area of Holland Straights. The type of vessel and the number of people on board were unknown.

Marine 2 responded, staffed with Chief Pruitt and one firefighter. Marine 1 from Smith Island responded with Chief 150 and two firefighters. DNR was preparing to respond but experienced a delayed launch. Water conditions were hazardous due to a small craft advisory that was in effect.

While enroute, Marine 1 and Marine 2 requested coordinates for the vessel, but the information given was not correct. Both Marine 1 and Marine 2 were slowed by strong winds and heavy seas.

DNR was able to arrive at the location and assist the vessel in distress, which resulted in cancellation of Marine 1 and Marine 2’s response.

Marine 1 returned safely to their harbor with the seas giving a better condition. Marine 2 faced some difficulties due to rough seas, but Chief Pruitt was able to safely navigate back thanks to his lifelong experience as a waterman.
