As summer draws to a close, students are preparing to return to school. Drivers are reminded to pay close attention to important safety guidelines during this period.

The Somerset County Board of Education has approved the academic calendar for the 2026–2027 school year. This step sets important dates for students, staff, and families to plan for the upcoming year.

The school year will begin with a staggered start on Monday, August 31, 2026, for select student groups. All students will report on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, marking the official start of classes for Woodson Elementary and Crisfield High.

Drivers are urged to watch for students walking and using crosswalks near schools. The speed limit in school zones is 15 MPH during school hours to help protect everyone’s safety.

By law, drivers must stop for school buses when the red lights are flashing at bus stops. Many buses now have stop-arm cameras to record license plates of vehicles that fail to stop while the red lights are activated.

In Maryland, passing a stopped school bus with flashing red lights can result in a fine up to $500 for the first offense and up to $1,000 for the second offense. Repeat violations may bring additional local penalties.

Protecting children’s safety remains a top priority. It is everyone’s responsibility to help ensure the well-being of students as they return to school.
