Watercraft in Distress

On 7/21/2026, emergency services responded to a report of a watercraft in distress near Long Point Island. A person camping on the island was caught in severe weather conditions and attempted to reach the mainland by kayak. Due to harsh weather and water conditions, he was unable to make the crossing.

Marine 2, staffed by four firefighters, was dispatched to assist. While enroute to reach the individual, a severe thunderstorm developed, forcing the crew to seek shelter in a cove on the opposite side of the island to stay out of the wind and heavy rain. Visibility was greatly reduced and multiple lightning strikes occurred in the area.

The rescue team-maintained communication with the stranded individual via cell phone. During the storm, he was able to cross safely to the rescue team's location. After the weather conditions improved, he was brought aboard Marine 2 without injury or medical complaint.

The individual was safely transported to another camping site. Once on land, the crew returned to service.
